Ft. Worden State Park – Port Townsend, WA

This summer I have been doing “little” journeys! My last one was up the Washington coast through Olympia National Park and up to Port Townsend, WA where many people told me I should go. And yes, its a beautiful place, I highly recommend a visit. As I drove up that way I had to decide between two State Parks to camp at, I really did not do much research and decided on Ft. Worden State Park, and I’m glad I did. Hence the name it is a old Fort with many old building still in use. There is a couple restaurants, a pub (great beer and food), yoga studio, cabins and homes to rent out and of course the campground.

The best part is the hiking! Ft. Worden State Park is located at the North most point in Port Townsend, A short hike through the tress get you to beautiful views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, then there is the military history of the old barracks, batteries and buildings. Reminded me a lot of the hikes I have done in the Marin Headlands in San Fransisco with all the old hidden barracks and such. There is also the Point Wilson Lighthouse on the grounds to hike to as well.

Thinking about the history and what it used to be like when it was a fully operational Fort is cool to think about…..from their website “Originally designed as a military base to protect Puget Sound, Fort Worden evolved into an iconic and cherished state park. The fort – featuring 100 historic structures – spans two miles of saltwater shoreline with views of the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, and the San Juan Islands”

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission acquired most of Fort Worden on September 30, 1971

Here is some info on the Park if you ever get in the area….below is my photo gallery of my visit…enjoy
