My Traveling Playlist

For those who know me well, I’m a music lover! I listen to music about 10 hours a day, love to see live shows and get excited to hear and lean about new stuff from friends, Spotfiy, YouTube or anywhere I can!

When I was a kid I made mixed tapes, recorded my favorite songs from the radio….then it was mixed CD’s, making mixes for friends or for the car ride to work or school….I used Limewire (don’t tell the police) and found all kinds of great stuff and made regular trips to the library for CDs to burn….now as the times change its all about playlists on Spotify….its great for travel for those times when I’m off-grid….gotta have something to listen to when there is no cell service!!

So after almost 3 years of travel it was time to make a “travel playlist” and to share my favorite travel songs! What makes a great travel playlist? I really don’t think there is a formula for that, some songs make the list because they tell a story of travel and that excites and inspires you as you travel and on the road…some songs just have that beat, right? They are must great songs to listen to behind the wheel or while having a beer as the sun sets…and some have a history…a song that transports you to a road trip or vacation from your past and just makes you smile.

My list consists of all those…One of the songs I first thought about was Luna’s California (All the Way) just one of those songs I love to drive to….I once told myself if I ever wrote a movie the opening scene will be someone driving with the top down listen to this song!!

I actually have 3 songs with California in the title….Its hard not to have a Led Zeppelin song on the playlist and Going to California is a favorite….I’ve spend many hours driving down California roads taking in the oceans, mountains, and redwoods…I guess those California songs stuck in my head for a reason.

One of my favorite musicians is Ryan Bingham and his song Southside of Heaven is beautiful song that has a motion to it…feels like you are a train running down the track…but be prepared, its not a happy song!

Motorhome by Jackie Greene has a wonderful lyric if you are a nomad….
“Well don’t let your neighbors bring you down
If you don’t like em you can just leave town”

…and Joe Purdy’s Oregon Trail makes references to a road trip to New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and Oregon….some of my favorite places.

My Home Town by Blitzen Trapper reminds me of San Francisco…I would put on my headphones and listen to the entire album American Goldwing and explore the wonderful city. My favorite city by far to walk and see where I end up!

I don’t know a lot about Houndmouth…I did see them open at Red Rocks for someone I should not say (he is in the news right now) and I do really like the song On the Road….I relate to this lyric…”I’m doing down where nobody knows me”… I’ve been known to sing this song to Mazzy as we drive down some unknown highway in the West : )

Same for Chris Stapleton’s Traveler
“I couldn’t tell you honey, I don’t know
Where I’m going but I’ve got to go
‘Cause every turn reveals some other road
And I’m a traveler, oh, I’m a traveler”

How true is that!?! Getting the itch to go even though you don’t know where…and getting exciting knowing there is a road untraveled.

No playlist is complete without the Grateful Dead…and of course Truckin’ makes the list…You can almost visualize their adventure as you listen to the song!!

Hope you enjoy the music…share, comment ect…..or even better tell me some of your best travel songs!!

until next time

“Sometimes the light’s all shining on me,
Other times I can barley see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long, string trip it’s been”
